Offensive & Defensive Basketball Plays
Tuesday, November 11th, 2008Basketball plays can definitely help you execute better and win more games, and the fundamentals of the game can help you understand the game of basketball, but there’s something that comes before both of these things…
Its heart, motivation, & attitude. Your heart will truly determine how much you want to win, your motivation will lead you there, and your attitude will be absorbed by your team. Before you do anything else, make sure to develop a lot of heart, a lot of motivation, and the right attitude. Your team may respond to a laid-back attitude, or they may need someone very strict. This is entirely up to you and your style of coaching.
The fundamentals of coaching basketball are pretty simple, but there are some things that you may not know. The 1st step is to develop your overall philosophy, then you would move on to offensive & defensive philosophy, and then its all about learning the fundamentals of the game such as effective team play, maximzing positions, setting screens, basic formations, and finally, choosing the right plays & drills.
Basketball plays are broken down into two broad categories, offense and defense. In offensive basketball plays, you have various types of formations to breakdown the defense. Each formation has advantages and disadvantages…the key is to picking something that highlights your stars and complements your role players, and allows everyone to be comfortable. The more comfortable your players are, the better they’ll execute.
In defensive basketball plays, there are also many formations, depending on your player’s talents. Its basically either a zone defense, in which you players don’t matchup with a particular man but rather rely more on help defense and rotating…or its a man-to-man defense, in which each player grabs a man and sticks to him, and help defense only comes during penetration or when needed.
